Description

Abstract

APGAR family is a quick and simple technique to explore family function. This instrument has progressively been incorporated into the clinical practice of the family doctor as a tool for dealing with family problems. It consists of a Likert self-report scale composed of five items that assess family functionality

Psychometric characteristics

For the Spanish population (Bellón et al., 1996) intraclass correlation coefficients of the 5 items superior to .55 were obtained. The item scale correlation ranged from .61 to .71; Cronbach's α was .84

No. of items
It consists of 5 items following a classification of five options that varies from 'never' to 'always'
Duration
5 min
Way of administration

Way of qualification

The answers indicate the degree to which you perceive these functions within your family unit. The score ranges from 0 to 4 points for each of the five factors. The interpretation of the score obtained is as follows:

- Normal family function: 17-20 points

- Mild dysfunction: 16-13 points

- Moderate dysfunction: 12-10 points

- Severe dysfunction: 9 points or less
