STAI assesses the level of trait anxiety (personality factor that predisposes to suffer or not anxiety) and anxiety state (the environmental factors that protect or generate anxiety), by means of 40 items that are answered on a Likert scale. Likewise, it can be used as an assessment instrument at different time points both for clinical recognition and in the assessment of follow-up.

The questionnaire consists of 20 items corresponding to a subscale to assess trait-anxiety and another 20 belonging to the measurement of anxiety-state, both on a Likert scale.
